Hogan's S&M Nymph
Hogan came up with this fly when he really began paying attention to what baetis nymphs actually looked like, not what most commercially tied flies in the fly bins told him they looked like. When he started turning over rocks on his he realized that most of the small baetis nymphs were no thicker than a hook shank and they were definitely not cylindrical in shape. furthermore they had color patterns that made them darker on top than they are underneath, which was very different from the standard flashback pattern he was fishing. Utilizing wire and thread, where the wire is spun to the side of the hook shank allowed him to create a a trim baetis nymph that is wider than it is tall and not cylindrical in nature.
